What is Pilates? Pilates is a unique method of exercise created by Joseph Pilates that by design simultaneously strengthens, lengthens and balances the body. These exercises are done in a specific order and requires muscular control from the powerhouse of the body along with mental focus and attentive breathing.

What is the Powerhouse? The powerhouse is a term used to landmark the body’s center/core. These are the muscles of the front, side and rear of the body and include the abdominals, back, hips, gluts and upper thighs.

How often should I do Pilates? We recommend 2-3 times a week as ideal. However if you can only get to the studio once a week be as consistent as possible to maximize your results. You could also reinforce your practice by doing mat work at home.

Do I have to be “in shape” before beginning Pilates? No! Wherever you are is where you start. However, if you have a known illness or injury we would want you to receive permission from your doctor or therapist before you begin and we would be happy to speak with them to explain what we do so that we could customize an appropriate workout for you.

When will I see results? Everyone responds differently but our clients tell us that they feel great after the first session. Generally, after 10 sessions you begin to physically notice the difference but the frequency of your practice has the greatest impact on your results.

Is there a difference between Pilates for men and women? Joseph Pilates intended the Method for men only. Thankfully, both men and women can do all the exercise he created. It just depends on the individual, not the gender.

Can children do Pilates? Teenagers may practice mat work. Children/teenagers are still developing their skeletal and muscular systems and so resistance training has to be done in moderation.

Can I start Pilates while I’m pregnant and what are the benefits of Pilates post pregnancy? If you have not practiced Pilates regularly before becoming pregnant we suggest that you wait until you’ve had your baby. There is an intense amount of focus on the abdominals and pelvic floor muscles in Pilates so once you’ve been given the ok by your doctor to do exercise, this would be an excellent activity to incorporate into your workout regimen.

What`s the difference between Pilates at a gym and at Pilates Connection? We teach classical and authentic Pilates which means that we stay true to the principals he applied to his work. All our teachers have gone through rigorous training in the Method investing at least 600 hours of training culminating in written and practical examinations. Our classes are small and carefully monitored. There are many variations and hybrids of Pilates that abound in gyms and other studios. We recommend that you are mindful of the instruction you choose.
